Final? Bracket for WCD

Well, the powers that be monkeyed around with the brackets a little more on Tuesday (swapping Kent-Meridian and Bethel) so the projected second round match-ups (assuming the seeding holds) would be:

SPSL #1 vs Narrows 3
SPSL #2 vs SPSL #5
SPSL #3 vs Narrows 1
SPSL #4 vs Narrows 2

(K-M being 5th out of 10 in the SPSL would be a higher seed than Stadium which is 4th out of 6 in the Narrows League)

This leaves Kentlake playing Curtis at 2:30pm on Friday.

Curtis beat Auburn Riverside 3-1 last week to capture the SPSL #7 seed. Curtis was ranked #8 in the first poll this year, but was beset with injuries early in season. They are healthy now and are a formidable foe for Kentlake, much more than Central Kitsap would have been.

If Kentlake beats Curtis then they have to play Fifth-ranked Olympia, a short scrappy team, in the second round (5:45pm on Friday).

WCD Changes Everything

I have no idea what is going on, but for some reason the "Powers That Be" have posted a schedule that flips the brackets on their ear - and does it extremely strangely.

In the original bracket that is in the Tournament Handbook and was posted online until this morning, the most likely second round matchups on the winners side were:

SPSL #1 vs Narrows #4
SPSL #2 vs Narrows #3
SPSL #3 vs Narrows #2
SPSL #4 vs Narrows #1

Makes sense. But wait...

For some unknown reason, a new bracket was posted today in which the #3 and #4 seeds have been flipped - essentially making the #4 seeds into #3 seeds and vice versa. So, the new matchups are:

SPSL #1 vs Narrows #3
SPSL #2 vs Narrows #4
SPSL #3 vs Narrows #1
SPSL #4 vs Narrows #2

Hopefully they will fix that, as that makes no sense.

This would mean a first round matchup against Curtis and a possible second round matchup against Olympia, but I am going to wait a day or two before analyzing those matchups as hopefully it will change back.

The Road to State

There are two methods to get to the State Tournament via the West Central District #3 (aka WCD) tournament.

The easiest route is to win the first two matches. This will put you in a group of four undefeated teams, all of which are guaranteed a spot at State. Those four teams play each other at 4pm on Saturday the 15th and then the winners play for 1st and 2nd, while the losers play for 3rd and 6th (both games at 8pm).

The harder route comes if you lose either of your first two matches. On the losers side, if you lose twice you are out. Otherwise, if you win the rest of your matches you tie for 4th/5th with one other one loss team. It doesn't matter if you lose-win-win-win or win-lose-win-win, you would get to the point where there are only two teams left in the losers bracket with one loss. However, those two one loss teams do NOT play each other. Instead they have a coin-flip to determine 4th/5th places.

Kentlake to Face Central Kitsap Friday

Kentlake will face the Central Kitsap Cougars at 4pm on Friday, November 7th at the Kitsap Pavilion in Silverdale. Central Kitsap finished 5th at the Narrows League Tournament, losing to eventual #1 Olympa, 3-0, and then beating Shelton, 3-2, in the loser out game. They wrapped up the tournament with a 3-2 victory over South Kitsap to finish 5th.

The Cougars were 11-6 overall and 6-4 in Narrows League action on the year.

If Kentlake defeats Central Kitsap, they will face the winner of the Bellarmine Prep (Narrows #2) and Auburn Riverside (SPSL #8) match at 7:30pm. If they lose to CK, then they would face the loser of the Bellarmine Prep/Auburn Riverside match, again at 7:30pm. The winner of the second round winners match will be guaranteed a berth at state.

Bellarmine Prep was 8-2 in league and 11-4 overall. They beat Wilson 3-0 in the first round of the Narrows League Tournament, then Gig Harbor 3-1 before losing to Olympia 2-3 in the final.

Assuming Kentlake does not lose twice on Friday, they will be back in action at the Kitsap Pavilion on Saturday, November 15th.

Falcons Take Third in SPSL; Kozy Sets Record

Kentlake defeated Puyallup 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 21-25, 27-25, 15-13) to earn the SPSL #3 seed to the WCD tournament this Friday. Senior Outside Hitter Melissa Kozy shattered the school record for kills with 32.

New Times for Newport Match

The Varsity match Friday against Newport HS has been moved to 6pm instead of 7:15pm. The JV match will be at 3:45pm instead of 6pm. That means there will be no admission charged for the JV match.

The Kentlake Varsity beat Kent-Meridian on Tuesday 3-1. Kentlake was led by Senior Outside Hitters Melissa Kozy with 16 kills and Sarah Ralph with 15. Senior Middle Blocker Mackenzie Kyle added 12 kills. Senior Setter Holly Marx had 42 assists and Libero Jenn Barber had 15 digs.

In earlier action, the Kentlake JV team was swept by K-M, 2-0.

Food Needed for Tournament on Saturday

This Saturday is the big Kent Classic, the premier early season volleyball tournament in Washington State. The tournament is hosted jointly by Kentlake and Kentwood. We need volunteers to bring food for the Hospitality Room. Please sign up online or send an email to "kentlakevb at comcast.net"

Help Still Needed On Tuesday

There are still a number of jobs that need to be done for the home contests against Kent Meridian tomorrow. Please volunteer to help out. We especially need JV parents to help during the Varsity games. Do not worry if you don't know how to do a job, most are very easy and we can easily provide training. The tough jobs already have people working them, so please help.

Freshman and Sophomore Schedules Up

The Freshman and Sophomore schedules are up on the consolidated calendar page. You need to be VERY careful in reading the Sophomore and Freshman games as there are some very strange things in there. For instance, on October 8th, the Kentlake Sophomore team plays the Auburn Riverside Sophomore team (known as "AR C" on the schedule). No problem there. However, they play each other at Auburn High School. So, please be careful about locations as this sort of thing happens several times during the year.

A note on times: you will notice that the Freshman and Sophomore games will often start at 5:45pm and the JV game will then start at 6pm. Seem strange? However, there is a very valid reason for it, and it actually benefits the parents for once. Under SPSL rules we have to charge admission for any Varsity contest, or sub-Varsity contest that proceeds a Varsity contest, that starts at 6pm or later. We are prohibited from charging admission for any sub-Varsity contest that starts before 6pm (maybe Varsity too, I can't remember). So, the spectators for the JV game would have to pay admission, but not the spectators for the Sophomore or Freshman game that starts at 5:45pm. However, it the game had started at 6pm, and there was a Varsity contest for any schoool after that, you would have to pay.

Online Calendars

You can download calenders for September and October from the website. Highlights of the season include the Kent Classic in September and the Spokane Crossover in October for the Varsity team and the Sumner JV Tournament for the JV team. Districts this year are at the Kitsap Pavilion in Silverdale. And, of course, the State Tournament, bumped one week for a ventriloquist, at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.

Regular season highlights include the non-league match with Kentwood at Kentlake on September 22nd and the league contests at Kentwood on October 27th and Senior Night against Auburn Riverside on October 21st. Those will all be huge matches.

The season starts very late, but there are five matches plus the Kent Classic tournament in the first nine days of the season. That will be a lot of volleyball in a short period, so use those down days well.

Where are the schedules?

Parents of players on the Freshman and Sophomore teams might, quite rightly, be wondering where the schedules for those teams are. Unfortunately, how many schools have Freshman and "C" teams changes from year to year (plus in some years Kentwood has two "C" teams and in others only one). Therefore the SPSL has to wait until after rosters have been finalized and the number of teams is known before they can develop the schedule. The past two years the Freshman and "C" teams have run a joint schedule since there were so few schools with "C" teams. Last year it was only Kentlake, Kentwood, Kentridge and Auburn Riverside with "C" teams. This year Kent Meridian is hoping to have all four also. Of course, not all of the schools are four year schools (and therefore don't have any Freshman teams) and some only have JV and Varsity teams.

We are very lucky that at least three of the four Kent schools have at least four volleyball teams - that is definitely the exception, not the rule, in this State.

Parents Need to Help

We need parents to help with all of the home matches this year. It works best if Varsity parents help with the JV games, JV parents help with the Varsity games and Freshman and "C" team parents help with their daughter's games.

The schedule for the Freshman and "C" team games will be available soon.

Please sign-up online.

Get Your Spirit Wear Today

You can order Kentlake Volleyball t-shirts, polos, sweatpants, etc online. Go to http://www.gearspiritpacks.com/, and use the User Id of "kentlake" and the password of "volleyball08". You only have one week from today to order items.

Varsity Jamboree

The Jamboree will be September 9th at Emerald Ridge HS on Puyallup's South Hill. It is a long way down there and the traffic can be bad, so allow plenty of time to get there. Play will be being at 3pm against Fife. The format is one game to 25 against 6 different teams. Round 1 is Fife (3pm) and Graham-Kapowsin (4pm). Round 2 is Curtis (5pm) and Stadium (5:30pm). Round 3 is North Mason (6pm) and Beamer (7pm).

You will notice that there are 4A teams from SPSL South and Narrows League plus 2A Fife (who is consistently very good).

Tryout Times

Times for Kentlake Volleyball Tryouts are posted below. Coach Behrens has "in service" days that week, so the times had to be arranged around her schedule. Also, these times will allow Coach Thorsness to attend more of the sessions. Coach Behrens says teams should be finalized by Friday with some possible cuts on Thursday, depending on the numbers.
  • Monday: 4-7pm
  • Tuesday: 1-3pm and 4-7pm
  • Wednesday: 4-7pm
  • Thursday: 4-7pm
  • Friday: 1-3pm and 4-7pm

State Tournament Date Change

The dates for the 4A State Volleyball Tournament in Kennewick have changed to November 21st and 22nd. No idea how that will affect the SPSL post-season tournament dates that were based on the earlier announced dates of November 14th and 15th.

Unfortunately, the Toyota Center wrote the tournament dates down wrong and they scheduled a Jeff Dunham concert for the night of the 14th, so the tournament had to move. Gee, sounds like we have been there before. I wonder if the Tacoma Dome is busy?

Tryout Up Next: August 25th

Camp is over and it is now time for summer break. When next they meet it will be for real with tryouts starting on August 25th.

All incoming freshman and anyone else that does not have a physical on file from within the last two years, must get a new sports physical. The form is available at http://www.kent.k12.wa.us/KSD/AT/students/physical.pdf or from any middle school or high school office and from many area doctors. Again, ALL INCOMING FRESHMEN MUST HAVE A NEW PHYSICAL performed after June 1st of this summer. That is a WIAA and KSD rule.

KJ was seeded 26 of 28 going into the tournament. Kellcee used her serving skill to start many winning points for KJ and played excellent defense. Congratulations to the KJ 17's.

Graduation Day

Tomorrow is Graduation Day for the six Seniors from the 2008 team: Amelia Hilsen, Amanda Ogle, Amber Anderson, Brittany Jamison, Maggie Henley and Kathy Taylor. Four of the six are in the top 25 in the graduating class, and the other two were only slightly lower. Amanda will play Rugby at Central Washington. Kathy will play Volleyball at Whitworth on an academic scholarship.

From the first day of practice as Freshmen it was apparent that this was a good group of girls and a good group of volleyball players. The Freshman Team (minus Brittany who played Varsity all four years and Amanda who played JV that first year) went 14-1 including a memorable match against Kentridge where they were trailing 13-2 in the deciding game and Amber served them to a 16-14 victory.

From the highs of winning a game at State this year and the dramatic victory over Bellarmine two years ago to get to State to the lows of the walking MASH unit that was the junior season, this group of girls has been the heart and soul of the team. They will be missed. We wish them all the best wishes for success in the future.

Free Clinics at Cedar Heights

Coach Behrens will be giving a series of free clinics for 7th and 8th graders at Cedar Heights on June 9th, 16th and 23rd from 3pm to 5pm in the Cedar Heights Gym. This is a great introduction to "Volleyball the Falcon Way" for those players.

Black Diamond Triathlon

The Kentlake Volleyball team is helping put on the Black Diamond Triathlon as a fundraiser for us. We need lots of assistance, so please bring your parents, brothers, sisters, hair dresser, whatever, we aren't picky, and sign up to help. You can signup online at http://www.kentlakevb.org/signup_triathalon.htm

Attention Incoming 9th Graders

Under WIAA [the state governing body for school activities] and Kent School District rules, middle school athletes cannot practice with their future high school team until after the last middle school spring sport has ended. This year that means until after June 6th. So, you are welcome, and encouraged, to come to summer practices, etc. but not until after June 6th.

Coach Behrens will have a meeting with incoming Freshman at Cedar Heights on Wednesday, May 14th at 3pm. Coach is trying to set up a seperate meeting with players from Mattson, or they are welcome to attend the meeting at Cedar Heights, although they will have to hustle to get there.

Incoming 9th Graders can help with the Car Wash on May 17th. That would be a good way to show early commitment to the volleyball program.

Coach Behrens is working with Coach Edwards at Cedar Heights to arrange for a free volleyball skills clinic for his players [both current 7th and 8th graders]. We are not sure the date for that yet, but again it will have to be after June 6th. Please watch this blog for more details.

Kent Classic to be September 20th

The annual Kent Classic Invitational Volleyball Tournament will be September 20th at Kentlake and Kentwood High Schools. With the completion of the new gym at Kentlake the field will expand to 30 teams. There are still a few spots available for this popular tournament featuring teams from across the Northwest (and last year Norway). There has been interest from teams as far away as Arizona this year. Tournament details will be announced soon.

Summer Camps

There will be two Falcon Volleyball Camps this summer, both July 14th to 17th.

The Falcon Middle School Camp for Girls and Boys going into Grades 6 to 9, will be Monday to Wednesday 9 to 3 and Thursday 9 to Noon in the Main Gym at Kentlake.

The Falcon Elementary Camp for Girls and Boys going into Grades 3 to 5, will also be Monday to Wednesday 9 to 3 and Thursday 9 to Noon but in the Auxiliary and New Gyms at Kentlake.

Both camps will be $80 for all four days and $20 for any single day. Players that register in advance will receive a camp t-shirt and water bottle. There will be a $10 Late Fee for registering on or after the first day of camp. Online registration will be available shortly via Active.com.

There will be no camp for high school players this summer. Information on other summer activities will be posted soon.

New Schedule Out - First Practice Will Be August 25th!

The new partial schedule is out and first practice for Volleyball will be August 25th, not August 18th as I guessed earlier. Sorry about that. The first three or four days will be tryouts following immediately by regular practice. The first possible day of playing is listed as Friday, September 5th, but that would require practicing on the two Saturdays or one Saturday and Labor Day.

Since there are now nine teams in SPSL North, the double-round robin schedule of the last two years is no more. Instead the Kent schools play each other twice (once in pre-season and once that counts for the league standings) and the other schools once. There is also a non-league match against Puyallup.

Senior Night will be on October 21st against Auburn Riverside.
  • Tuesday, September 16: Kent Meridian @ Kentlake
  • Thursday, September 18: Kentlake @ Kentridge
  • Monday, September 22: Kentwood @ Kentlake
  • Wednesday, September 24: Federal Way @ Kentlake
  • Tuesday, September 30: Kentlake @ Tahoma
  • Thursday, October 2: Kentlake @ Auburn
  • Wednesday, October 8: Kentlake @ Puyallup NL
  • Tuesday, October 14: Kentridge @ Kentlake
  • Thursday, October 16: Jefferson @ Kentlake
  • Tuesday, October 21: Auburn Riverside @ Kentlake
  • Thursday, October 23: Kentlake @ Kent Meridian
  • Monday, October 27: Kentlake @ Kentwood
The SPSL Tournament is November 1st, West Central District Tournament is November 7th and 8th and State is November 14th and 15th.

Two tournaments and up to two other pre-season matches will be added. No word yet on the Jamboree.

Kentlake Summer Camp

Kentlake Summer Volleyball Camp will be held at Kentlake July 14th to 18th. Details will follow but we were sure parents would be interested in the dates for planning purposes.

In case you are wondering, tryouts for the 2008 Volleyball Team should be August 18th to either 20th or 21st with regular practice starting the day following tryouts. In other words, if you make the team tryouts are basically the first three days of practice for the season.

Also, a select group of players will attend the Western Washington University Team Camp July 9th to 12th. Coach Dianne Flick and the WWU Vikings were the National Runner-Up in Division II this last year and play in the very competitive Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC).

2007 Team Awards

The 2007 team awards for all four teams are now listed in the right hand panel on the blog. Congratulations to all of the award winners.

The 2007 volleyball banquet will be held on Monday, March, 17th at 6pm in Rainier Hall. More details to follow. Note: The banquet is for ALL TEAMS, not just Varsity.
