Club VB Open House

KJVBC, one of the premier volleyball clubs in the entire Pacific Northwest, will host an open house/orientation this Sunday at 4:30p-5:30p at Kentwood. While obviously slanted towards KJ, this would be an excellent time learn about club volleyball in general. Tryouts for club start November 4th for junior high players and November 18th for high school age players.

Game at Auburn Riverside

Tonight Kentlake takes on SPSL North leader Auburn Riverside. #5 Riverside is led by #5 Senior OH Brooke Bray who is averaging about 20 kills/match and #3 Junior Setter Brooklynn Bradbury who is averaging about 40 assists/match. Please make the trip down to Riverside to cheer the Falcons to victory.

Thursday the Falcons host Kent-Meridian in a critical match if Kentlake is to make the playoffs followed by Senior night on the 26th against Kentwood.

Only three matches left in the run for the playoffs. Please be there for our team.

Game Tonight Against Auburn

There are home contests this evening against Auburn. Auburn is 1-0 in conference (a 3-2 victory over Kentridge at home) and 3-1 overall (plus a non-reported game against Auburn Riverside). This is a very important match for the Kentlake Varsity so we need everyone to come and cheer Kentlake on to victory.

Tuesday Home Match with Tahoma

Come out and cheer the Falcons to victory over Tahoma on Tuesday. The JV and Freshman contests are at 6pm followed by the Varsity at 7:15pm. Tahoma is a deceptive 1-4 on the season with losses to SPSL South powers Rogers and Curtis and to Kentwood. It should be a good match.

We need people to help with concessions for JV/Freshman (a JV parent could still watch the game while doing concessions) and scorebook for the Freshman game.

We also need lines for JV and Varsity.

Reminder: There is a home match against Auburn on Thursday.

Whitworth Volleyball Match Video

All home matches for Whitworth University (and former Kentlake player Kathy Taylor) will be streamed free over the internet. Whitworth plays Linfield and Willamette this weekend. A link to the video is available at http://www.whitworth.edu/Athletics/Teams/Volleyball/Releases/2009/Sept16.htm. This is the opening of NW Conference play for the Pirates. They went 1-3 last weekend but played a very tough schedule at the Cal-Lu-Fornia Tournament at Cal Lutheran, sweeping #6 :a Verne but losing to #7 Trinity and #23 Cal Lutheran in five games.

Don't forget that tomorrow is International Talk Like a Pirate Day!

KW loses to KR

Kentwood lost to Kentridge, 3-2, tonight. Could be a very interesting year in Kent volleyball.

Varsity Beats K-M

Kentlake Varsity defeated Kent-Meridian, 3-2 (22-25, 25-14, 25-10, 22-25, 15-10). JV lost to KM, 2-0 (9-25, 10-25) while the Freshman team won, 2-0 (25-19, 25-18).

Club Tryouts

Local club volleyball teams are starting to announce tryout dates. Clubs are prohibited from having tryouts for high school age teams (U15 and up) until after the end of State. Most clubs will have tryouts during the week before Thanksgiving. They can start on November 18th and many will have them between then and that weekend.

Jammin' (Carly Stowell Foundation)

RSS: http://kentlakevb.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

Feedburner: http://feeds.feedburner.com/KentlakeVolleyball

The Feedburner version is also delivered automatically to Twitter using Twitterfeed. You can subscribe to the Twitter feed at http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/60981247.rss. That version will include the Feedburner feeds from the blog, plus any Tweets.

Don't know what I am talking about? Don't worry, I don't really either. Just continue to check this blog for information and Twitter for in-game updates and time-sensitive information.

Varsity Swept by Newport

The Kentlake Varsity lost 3-0 to Newport, 25-23, 25-19, 25-20. JV lost 2-1 (21-25, 25-10, 15-13) but the Freshman team improved to 2-0 sweeping Newport, 25-19, 25-21, 15-10.

Remember, you can follow Kentlake Volleyball on Twitter all season long with in-game updates. Follow KentlakeVB at Twitter.com.

Volunteers Needed

We need volunteers to help during all the home games this year. The first home match is next Thursday. The freshman and JV matches are usually at the same time, so it would be great to have Varsity parents that would help at 6pm for those, and then to have Freshman and JV parents stick around to help during the Varsity matches at 7:15pm. This way everyone helps and everyone gets to watch their kids play.

We need scorekeepers, scorebook, lines, libero tracker (probably the easiest job), ticket sellers (must be a PTSA member) and concessions (also must be a PTSA member).

Don't worry if you don't know how to do something, we can easily train you.

Please send your preferences on what you want to do to Tami Kyle (ladyblue-55 "at" comcast.net). Please volunteer to help today. We need everyone's support.

We Have Pictures!

Ward Honbo, Devyn on the Freshman team's dad, has uploaded pictures to Flickr and sent us a link. Check out his pictures of the Freshman team's game against Roosevelt. We encourage anyone else with game pictures to upload to Flickr or a similar service and send us the link to share. It only takes a few minutes and it is free.

Tweeters Needed

We need volunteers, particularly from the Freshman or JV parents, that are willing to tweet (send text messages from their cell phones to our Twitter account) in-game updates. If you are willing, please send a message to "kentlakevb at comcast.net" and we will get you signed up.

More On The Strike Effects

Coach Behrens and Coach Moore are not allowed in the building during the "contract day" so that means practice cannot begin before 3pm except on Saturday. This means today's practice was moved, I assume to 3pm.

Also, the district may shut off the teachers email accounts. If so then Coach Behrens will make alternate arrangements so she can still get volleyball related emails.

There is a picture of Coach Behrens in the Covington Reporter's article on the strike.

Thursday, August 27, 2009

The Strike and Volleyball

As you know, the teachers of the Kent School District voted last night to go on strike. While coaches are on a different contract than teachers, Coach Behrens and Coach Moore are teachers at Kentlake and therefore they are effected by the strike. They will have only one hour before and after any event (practice, game, etc) in the building to deal with pressing matters. Practice and games will go on as normal.

Tryouts Start Tomorrow

Don't forget that tryouts start tomorrow at 3pm. Be ready to start practicing with all paperwork turned in (this should have been done last week during Falcon Day) and dress ready to play volleyball. Remember "15 minutes early is On-Time and On-Time is Late".

Dont Forget the Free Physicals

Don't forget the free sports physicals at K-M tomorrow. Any KSD student can get the free physical between 9am and noon.

Turn in Paperwork to Coach

All paperwork (including any required physical) should be turned into Coach Behrens or to Athletic Director Bruce Rick in the Athletics Office on Falcon Day (August 20th for Freshmen and Seniors, August 21st for Sophomores and Juniors).

You should not wait until the first day of tryouts to turn in the paperwork as this will delay your start of practice and will not reflect well on you. Remember, all Freshmen and most Juniors must have a sports physical prior to being allowed to participate. There are no waivers allowed. All Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors that have not had a sports physical in the last two years must get a new one. All Freshmen have to have a sports physical even if they had one in 8th grade.

Change in Tryout Times

There will be a Kentlake Teachers Union meeting in the gym on Wednesday night, the 26th, during tryouts week. As a result we can't have tryouts that night (they get really picky about balls flying in front of the podium) so we are switching the night session from Wednesday to Tuesday. The revised schedule for tryouts is:

Monday Aug 24th: 3:00 - 5:30pm & 7:00 - 9:00pm
Tuesday Aug 25th: 3:00 - 5:30pm & 7:00 - 9:00pm
Wednesday Aug 26th: 3:00 - 5:30pm
Thursday Aug 27th: 3:00 - 6:00pm
Friday Aug 28th: 9:00 - 11:30am & 1:00 - 3:00pm
Saturday Aug 29th: 9:00 - 11:00am

Rules Summary

I found a good volleyball rules summary on the Overlake School volleyball website. It is a couple of years old, but still a good summary. It does not talk about things like Liberos. So, if any parents need a quick overview, check it out (you will need MS Word or Word Viewer). Hopefully all the players already know these things. ;)

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

Free Sports Physicals

All Freshmen, most Juniors and anyone else that has not had a sports physical in the last two years has to have one prior to being allowed to practice. If you have not yet gotten your physical you can get one at most any doctor, or you can attend the KSD Sports Physical Clinic at Kent-Meridian on August 15th, from 9:00-12:00. It is a FREE sport physical.

Practice Times for Tryouts/1st Week

The practice times for the first week (including tryouts and "normal" practice) are listed below. Practice has to be scheduled around Coach Behren's "in-service days".

Monday Aug 24th: 3:00 - 5:30pm & 7:00 - 9:00pm
Tuesday Aug 25th: 3:00 - 5:30pm
Wednesday Aug 26th: 3:00 - 5:30pm & 7:00 - 9:00pm
Thursday Aug 27th: 3:00 - 6:00pm
Friday Aug 28th: 9:00 - 11:30am & 1:00 - 3:00pm
Saturday Aug 29th: 9:00 - 11:00am

Tryouts are through Wednesday or Thursday. The rest of the practices are for those that make one of the three teams.

Calling All Photographers

Anyone interested in taking pictures of Kentlake Volleyball events and sharing them with the rest of us, please contact us at kentlakevb "at" comcast.net. You can simply upload your pictures to an online system like Flickr and then send a link to us. We will quickly verify the pictures and then post the link on the blog or twitter. We really want all sorts of pictures, not just action shots but especially "candid" shots. In lots of ways those are the more important ones. Don't worry if you are not a professional photographer, neither are we.

Kentlake Volleyball on Twitter

Kentlake Volleyball is now on Twitter. You can see the most recent Twitter posts at the top of the lower section on the right side of this blog. The three sources of information will be used for different things.

Twitter will be used for small bits of information of a short term nature. A tweet can only be 140 characters long, so you won't get large amounts of information. They may be reminders or game scores or schedule changes. Things that are more immediate in both speed of distribution and duration.

This blog will be used for things of more lasting interest, but not permanent interest. For instance, game summaries, announcements of events, etc. The blog will also list the five most recent "tweets" from Twitter.

We will be looking for volunteers to post game scores (to Twitter) and summaries (to the blog) for each of the teams this fall, so keep that in mind if you are willing to volunteer for that. We especially need that for the Freshmen and JV teams as they don't get the coverage that Varsity does.

The website (www.kentlakevb.com) will be used for things of a more permanent nature. For instance, important announcements (both on the website and the blog), rosters, schedule, etc. These will largely be for things that affect the entire season, while the blog may affect a week and Twitter a day or two.

Will There Be Cuts At Tryouts?

In the past we have had the good fortune to have four teams at Kentlake: Varsity, JV, "C" and Freshmen. Unfortunately all "C" teams in the Kent School District were cut this year due to the budget shortfalls. As a result there will be 1/4 fewer spots available for players. Expanding rosters to accommodate more players just puts more stress on the coaches and players and makes playing time that much harder to come by. So, for the first time in many years there will be large cuts at tryouts this year. It is not something the coaching staff likes to do, but there is no alternative this year.

When Are Tryouts?

Tryouts start Monday, August 24th. Coach Behrens does not run tryouts by age group so there is no separate “freshman tryouts”, etc. When they will start on the 24th has not been determined as that depends on Coach Behrens teaching schedule (typically they have “in service” days that week) but they are usually “two a days” for Monday to Wednesday at least, maybe Thursday. Check back for more details or look for more information at Falcon Days.

Remember, all Freshmen and most Juniors (and a few others) will need new physicals as school sports physicals are only good for two years. All incoming Freshmen are required to have a new physical even if they had one in 8th grade.

Help Needed with Triathalon Fundraiser

Coach Behrens has organized a fundraiser for the Black Diamond Triathlon at Nolte State Park in Enumclaw, WA. This will be our 3rd year participating. The volunteer coordinator has reserved our spot once again. The information below explains the ‘in’s and out’s’ of the fundraiser and the possible money that can be made in a total of 2 days. The job descriptions are listed below along with the number of volunteers that are needed.

1. Fri June 19 10am – 5:00pm SETUP AND TEARDOWN START/FINISH:

Help setup down all the finish line equipment (tents, announcer tower, sound equipment, tables and chairs, flagging, finish chutes, bike racks, etc.).

Volunteers needed: 10-15 ($25 per hr/volunteer)

*Kentlake has school that day, so we need volunteers who have the flexibility in their schedules to participate on Friday.
*5pm is the release time; if equipment is set up prior to 5pm.

2. Sat June 20 6am – 2pm DAY-OF-RACE – REGISTRATION, COURSE MONITORS, WATER STATIONS

Includes packet pick-ups, monitoring the different courses, giving water to racers, setting up for lunch, and the different registration processes for racers.

Volunteers needed: 30-40 ($10 per hr/volunteer)

3. Sat June 20th 11am – 4:00pm TEARDOWN TO FINISH RACE

Help tear down all the finish line equipment (tents, announcer tower, sound equipment, tables and chairs, flagging, finish chutes, bike racks, etc.).

Volunteers needed: 10-15 ($25 per hr/volunteer)

Here is what we need:

We have the majority of girls signed up for the day of the race. A few girls were checking on availability.

1. About 8 more volunteers to help with set-up/take-down. Again, those can be the same people or we can use other volunteers from the 30.
2. About 15 more volunteers for the day of the race. Remember we can have up to 40 volunteers for the day-of-the race jobs.
3. Email me back and let me know what crew you can help out with: set-up/tear-down OR day-of-the-race crew.

We can make close to $5,000 if we fill all positions. This is the only fundraiser for Summer/Fall of 09, other than concessions during games, ticket sales, etc. during season. Please email Coach Behrens and let her know your availability. We appreciate your time and effort. Also, if you have any additional questions let Coach Behrens know as well. Just a side note: the kids tend to have a lot of fun during the day!
