Whitworth University swept Concordia-Moorhead, 27-25, 26-25, 25-20, to advance in the NCAA D-III Volleyball Championships. They will face the winner of the St, Olaf-Northwestern match tomorrow at 1:30pm Pacific in St. Paul, MN. The match will be webcast on www.mnsportsnetwork.com

Tryout Times Changed

Pacific Coast VBA and Lake Tapps have changed the times for their 15/16 tryouts. Be sure to check the club's website to double check any tryout time as they may change from what we have posted.

We have also added tryout times for NW Junior's Kent teams. The teams will practice in Kent, but their tryouts are up at Juanita HS in Kirkland.

Banquet Date Changed

The volleyball banquet will be held on Thursday, November 18th. Details to follow.

Whitworth Off to Minnesota

In a totally unexpected turn of events, Whitworth is off to St. Paul, MN to play Concordia-Moorhead in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Friday. As a result the "national" tournament has no regional sites west of I-35 (runs from Minneapolis to San Antonio).

Banquet Date Set

The Kentlake Volleyball Banquet will be next Tuesday, November 16th, at 6pm in the Kentlake Commons. Details will be announced later.

Whitworth Wins Northwest Conference Championship

Whitworth University, with former Kentlake star Kathy Taylor, swept Willamette University and Lewis & Clark College this weekend to win the Northwest Conference championship outright. Whitworth finished 14-2 in conference, one match ahead of PLU and UPS. Whitworth automatically qualifies for the NCAA Tournament with the victory.

With Whitworth, PLU and UPS all likely to be in the tournament, it is a distinct possibility that the West Regional will be in Tacoma starting either Thursday or Friday.

Whitworth Flying High

Whitworth University, with former Kentlake MB Kathy Taylor is in 1st Place in the Northwest Conference, tied with the University of Puget Sound. UPS must still play perennial power PLU next week. Whitworth is on track for their first post-season invitation since 2005.

Falcons Travel Back in Time

to relive their formative years with a match a Mill Creek MS against KM. The KM gym is being renovated so they are playing their home matches at Mill Creek. The gym has a very, very low ceiling (something about the flood plain) and there is not a lot of seating.

Injury Update

The injury to Kentridge Sophomore MB Kiera Brunson was not as bad as it appeared. She dislocated her knee cap and was in intense pain, but initial x-rays show no damage and she should be playing again soon.

Falcons Overcome TJ

Despite losing game one 26-28, Kentlake came back to beat TJ, 3-1 tonight. With the return of Junior OH Natalie Berube from injury, Kentlake was trying different combinations with a new lineup in each game.

One of the biggest stats was from the serving line where Kentlake had 25 aces, but also had 22 service errors. Ginger Nason led the Falcons with 9 aces (one off the school record held by Courtney Thompson, Hannah Merrit and Kathy Taylor) while Natalie Berube had 6 (and did not serve in game 4).

The Falcons next head to Wenatchee for the Wenatchee Invite on Saturday and then return home for Senior Night against Auburn Riverside on Tuesday.

TJ Comes To Town

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders will visit Kentlake for a SPSL North League match this evening. JV and Cardinal at 6pm with Varsity to follow at approximately 7:15pm.

Kentlake and TJ are both 1-7 on the year, but TJ has only won four sets all year.

We will have updates on Twitter after (and maybe during) every game from Wenatchee. Follow us on Twitter.com/KentlakeVB.

Changes in Club Volleyball

There have been many changes in the local club volleyball scene recently.
  • Synergy VBC - a new club in Maple Valley run by long-time local coach Jeff Potter. The club will have U12, U14 and U16 teams this year and will not travel nationally. One of the lowest prices of the local clubs. Obviously no track record but Potter knows the market very well.
  • Pacific Coast VBA - a relaunch of the venerable Saturday's Warriors VBC with "higher sights". Stated goal to compete on a national basis and against the teams like KJ and Puget Sound. Prices reflect the increased travel and expectations, so it will be interesting to see how their old market responds. Saturday's Warriors filled a very well defined niche that PCVBA is going away from.
  • Jammin' VBC - Have renovated the gyms at Camp Berachah/Ranier Christian HS and will practice there this year.
  • Puget Sound VBA - Moving into new facility at South Hill Mall in cooperation with Competitive Edge. Finishes the "break" from the old ownership based in Fife. Change means even a longer commute from the Kent/Covington area but should be a nicer facility.
  • Lake Tapps VBC - Recently took over the facility of Puget Sound Gymnastics and is turning it into a volleyball/basketball facility called "The Five12 Courts". It is in "East" Puyallup about a mile due east of the Puyallup Fair grounds. A much longer commute from Kent, but should be a nice facility.
Tryout dates have been set by a number of clubs. Tryouts for high school age teams can start November 17.
  • KJVBC - U15/U16: November 17, 7:30pm @ Kentwood HS
    U17/18: November 19, 7:30pm @ Kentwood HS
    Callbacks for U15-U18: Saturday, November 20th, 12:30pm - 3:30pm
  • Pacific Coast VBA -  U15- Saturday, November 20th 3:00pm  Kentridge High School Main Gym
U16- Wednesday, November 17th 7:30pm at  Green River Community College Gym Main Campus
U17-U18- Sunday, November 21st 3:00pm at Kentridge High School
  • Synergy VBC - U16: Saturday, November 20th, 2010, 12-2pm @ Tahoma Jr High School - Main Gym
  • PSVBA - U15/U16: Sunday, Nov. 21st, 2pm - 4pm
    U17/U18: Saturday, Nov. 20th, 9am - 11:30pm
  • Jammin' VBC - U15: Sunday Nov 21st, 10am -1pm, Kentlake HS New Gym
U16: Saturday Nov 20th, 9am - Noon, Kentlake HS New Gym
Unfortunately, that means there are some conflicts, but fewer than I expected:
  • U15: KJ callbacks with PCVBA, Synergy U16 (but PCVBA and Synergy do not conflict)
  • U16: KJ and PCVBA
Jammin' ends at noon and Synergy starts at noon.
  • U17/U18:None, but would have to hurry to go from PSVBA to KJ callbacks

Varsity Travels to Wenatchee on Saturday

The Kentlake Varsity will participate in the Wenatchee Invite this weekend in Wenatchee. We are the #1 seed in Pool 4 (#4 seed overall). We have Sunnyside (obviously not a school from Western Washington!), Squalicum and East Valley (Yakima) in our pool. We start with East Valley at 8:30am in the Small Gym at Wenatchee HS (unless things change between now and then).

The top three seeds in the tournament are Woodinville (6-4), Wenatchee (8-2) and Marysville-Pilchuck (4-4).

The team will leave on Friday afternoon, probably after 5th period but Coach Behrens will send home a schedule today.

If you do a Google Maps search on "Wenatchee High School" you will probably get Eastmont HS. That is not the right one. Wenatchee HS is by Triangle Park at 1101 Millerdale Ave (NOT 101, sorry about that, I had it wrong earlier).

    Falcons Fall in Five

It was a hard fought match, with plenty of momentum swings, but Kentridge pulled out the victory in the end after what was undoubtedly the longest match in Kentlake volleyball history. Unfortunately, the length was due not just to the close five set affair, but rather to an injury to Kentridge Sophomore MB Kiera Brunson who went down in the fourth set to what appeared to be a knee injury. The match was delayed almost an hour as paramedics worked on her and finally resumed in the Back Gym so they could work in private.

Kentlake rushed out to a 8-1 lead in Game 1 and played the best volleyball of the season in that set. They were looking very good together and played exceptionally, finally winning 25-20 after Kentridge recovered some towards the end. Unfortunately, game two was the reverse with Kentridge getting out to a quick lead and cruising to a 25-14 victory. Game three was a close affair from the start with Kenlake staving off game point and then taking the game 28-26. Unfortunately, Kentridge was clicking in game 4 and won 25-12, despite the hour long delay. Kentridge then pulled out to a quick 8-4 lead in game five, but Kentlake came back to pull to 13-12. Unfortunately Kentridge finished off the game 15-13.

Kentlake faces 1-7 Thomas Jefferson, Coach Behrens' old school, on Wednesday. TJ has won five sets all year, none in league action.

    Falcons Face Kentridge

Kentlake is home to face the Kentridge Chargers. Kentridge participated in a pair of sweeps last week - of Mount Rainer and by Kentwood. They are 2-1 in conference and 3-4 overall. JV and Cardinal teams at 6pm followed by Varsity around 7:15pm.

    Thursday, September 30, 2010

    Falcons Travel to Auburn

The Kentlake volleyball teams travel to Auburn High School (that's the one near downtown) for contests tonight. JV and Cardinal are at 6pm and Varsity follows sometime after 7:15pm. Auburn Varsity is 1-5 on the year with a victory over Federal Way and loses to Kentridge, Auburn Riverside, Curtis, Auburn Mountainview and Bonney Lake. This is an important contest in making Districts for both teams.

    Tuesday, September 28, 2010

    Puyallup is an AWAY game

The game against Puyallup on October 6th was listed as a home game on the schedule. Unfortunately, it was also listed as a home game on Puyallup's schedule. Ooops.

So, the game is officially an away match. Since it is the only match that week, we will not have another home contest until Monday, October 11th against Kentridge.

    Kentlake Travels to Tahoma Today

The Falcons travel to Tahoma HS in Maple Valley for tonight's contest. JV and Cardinal will play at 6pm followed by Varsity at approximately 7:15pm (although that is proving to be optimistic this year with no Varsity contest starting before 7:30pm). Tahoma is coming off a 5 set upset of Kentwood last Wednesday.

The bus will leave for Tahoma at 4:45pm from Kentlake.

    Saturday, September 25, 2010

Kentlake Moving to KW for Afternoon

Kentlake went 0-4 this morning, losing a tough match to Issaquah and then battling Bainbridge to the wire, but losing. Kentlake will be a #2 seed in the second round of pools, playing at 1pm and 2pm. The opponents will be determined later.

BBQ Before Norway Game on Friday

On Friday we will host the traveling club team from the Sunnfjord area of Norway.Norway does not have high school sports like we think of them and rely on club sports for their athletic training, so this team would be the equivalent of a USAV club team. The have played Kentridge and Kent-Meridian and play Kentwood tonight, while also taking in some sightseeing. They will play in the Kent Classic on Saturday.

We will host a barbeque before the game at 3:45pm. All players will get a free hamburger or chicken sandwich. We will also have a limited amount of cheese pizza for any vegetarians. Parents and others are encourage to come for the barbeque and purchase their meal.

The game (Varsity only) will be at 5pm and will be a best 2 out of 3 contest.

Varsity and JV Travel to Central Kitsap

The Falcons travel to Central Kitsap High School in Silverdale for an early evening contest with the always tough Central Kitsap Vikings. JV will play at 5pm followed by Varsity around 6:15pm.

CK is located at 3700 NW Anderson Hill Rd in Silverdale. The easiest route is through Tacoma, over "Galloping Gerty", north to Bremerton (WA-16 will turn into WA-3) and follow that through Bremerton and then north on WA-3 to Silverdale. The final part of the directions from Mapquest:

    9.WA-16 W becomes WA-3 N.8.6 mi
10.Take the NEWBERRY HILL RD exit.
11.Turn RIGHT onto NW NEWBERRY HILL RD.0.2 mi
12.NW NEWBERRY HILL RD becomes SILVERDALE WAY NW.0.7 mi
13.Turn LEFT onto NW ANDERSON HILL RD.0.3 mi
14.3700 NW ANDERSON HILL RD is on the RIGHT.

If you make it to the Kitsap Mall area, you went too far.

    Falcons Down Mountainers

The Kentlake Varsity beat Mount Rainier, 3-1, behind the 13 kills of Megan Hartnett and the 8 kills each from Kristin O'Connell, Sean Taylor and Marissa Lytle. Ginger Nason had 35 assists and Miranda Marburger had 19 digs.

There is no rest for the Falcons who head over to Silverdale for a 6:15 match against Central Kitsap. JV plays at 5pm.

    First League Match

Everyone is back to 0-0 on the year as the first league match happens tonight against Mount Ranier. Mount Ranier moved up from 3A this year and joined the SPSL North. They are 2-3 on the year with a sweep of 3A Evergreen and a 3-2 victory over winless Bethel, accompanied by lopsided sweeps by Enumclaw, Curtis and Emerald Ridge (who are a combined 10-2).

Varsity has shown a lot of progress but no victories yet. Come cheer on Kentlake to the first Varsity victory of the year.

    Monday, September 20, 2010

    Kentwood

Do I really need to say more?

Tonight Kentwood comes to Kentlake. JV and Cardinal at 6pm. Varsity at about 7:15pm. Please come out and support the team. See you there!

    Adult Volleyball League

Anyone adult interested in playing volleyball this winter should check out the Maple Valley Parks & Rec site.

They also have "drop-in" volleyball on Friday nights starting this week through December at Tahoma Junior High School from 6pm - 8pm.

    Friday, September 17, 2010

    Planning for next week

Next week is the busiest week of the season for Kentlake volleyball.

We start on Monday with the home match against rival Kentwood. We still need several people to help with that.

On Wednesday we have the match with Mount Ranier, a new school to the SPSL North and the first League match of the year. We still need several people to help with that.

On Thursday we travel to Central Kitsap in Silverdale. That match starts early with JV at 5pm and Varsity at 6:15pm. Note that the Cardinal team is not playing. It is at least a 90 minute ride to Silverdale, so the bus will leave shortly after school (coaches will have a definite time next week). It would be great to see lots of parents there. Let me know if you want to carpool.

On Friday we host the team from our Sister City in Sunnfjord, Norway. The best 2 out of 3 match will be at 5pm with a joint dinner at 3:45. We will host a barbeque for the two teams and hamburgers and grilled chicken will be available for purchase for non-players at the concession stand that evening. JV and Cardinal are not playing but are encouraged to attend this special match.

On Saturday we host the Kent Classic jointly with Kentwood. Varsity will start play at 8am at Kentlake. Where they play in the late morning/afternoon will depend on how they play against Issaquah and Rogers in the first morning pool. The upper bracket will be at Kentlake and the lower bracket at Kentwood. Check Twitter (www.twitter.com/Kentlakevb) for updates and www.kentclassic.com for more information.

    Whitworth Travels to Tacoma Schools

The Whitworth University volleyball team, with former Kentlake star Kathy Taylor (who still holds the school records for blocks in a season, blocks in a career and aces in a game [along with Hannah Merritt and Courtney Thompson]) ventures west to play PLU today at 7pm in Parkland and UPS tomorrow at 6pm in Tacoma.

    Varsity Loses in Four

Kentlake Varsity lost to Kentridge last night, 22-25, 12-25, 25-20, 26-28. The team definitely showed improvement from Tuesday. Kentlake was again led by Rebecca Kozy with 6 kills and Sean Taylor with 4 blocks. Ginger Nason led the offense with 15 assists and Miranda Marburger led the defense with 12 digs.

Kentlake returns home on Monday against Kentwood. JV/Cardinal at 6pm and Varsity follows about 7:15pm. We still need help with game functions.

    Thursday, September 16, 2010

    Kentlake Travels to Kentridge

All three Kentlake teams travel to Kentridge for games tonight. As usual the Cardinal and JV games are at 6pm and Varsity will start around 7:15pm. Please come and cheer the Falcons to victory.

All players must ride the bus from Kentlake. They should be there before 4:45pm to catch the bus. They must return on the bus after the Varsity game.

    Wednesday, September 15, 2010

    Varsity Loses to KM

The Kentlake Varsity lost an error plagued match to KM, 25-15, 25-17, 25-19, on Tuesday. The Falcons were led by Senior RS Rebecca Kozy with 7 kills. Kentlake will try to quickly correct things as they face Kentridge, at Kentridge, on Thursday.

The Kentlake Cardinal and JV teams both swept K-M.

    Tuesday, September 14, 2010

It's Here. It's Here. The new season is here. WE'RE SOMEBODY!

Sorry, that's a paraphrase of my favorite Steve Martin quote.

The first match of the season is finally here. All teams play Kent-Meridian at Kentlake. Cardinal and JV will play at 6pm, followed by Varsity at about 7:15pm. We encourage all parents [aunts, uncles, next-door neighbors, etc] to come and cheer Kentlake to victory. The Cardinal team will play in the back gym and JV and Varsity will play in the main gym.

We still have need for several parents to help with tonight's matches. We need one Varsity lines person and lines and libero tracker for the Cardinal match.

If you can't make the game you can follow on Twitter at www.twitter.com/KentlakeVB. You can also get updates via email by texting "follow KentlakeVB" to 40404 (standard text messaging rates apply).

Cardinal Team Takes 3rd at Sumner

The Cardinal team finished 3rd at the Round Thunder Tournament in Sumner this last weekend. They lost to Auburn in the Semi-Finals. Good job, ladies (and Coach Moore)!

p.s. Be sure to wish Mr. Moore well this week. He is getting married this Friday. The date was chosen for sentimental reasons on his Finance's part, obviously not to fit in the volleyball schedule well!

    Friday, September 10, 2010

    Please Help

We still need help with seven jobs for this Tuesday's match against K-M, including all five Cardinal Team jobs, JV scorebook and Varsity lines.

Remember: If you help at a match, you get in free.

    Thursday, September 9, 2010

    Norway Match Rescheduled

The match against the club team from our Sister City in Norway has been rescheduled to 5pm on September 24th. This will be a Varsity only match. The two teams will have a joint dinner before the match.

JV and Cardinal team pictures will be taken right after school so they will be done before the match at 5pm. Hopefully Varsity pictures will be taken this weekend (weather permitting).

    Wednesday, September 8, 2010

    Help Needed for Tuesday's Match

We really need help running the match next Tuesday against Kent Meridian. We only have twelve of the nineteen spots filled. We have the following job openings:

    Cardinal Lines (*2)
    Cardinal Libero Tracker
    Cardinal Scorebook
    Cardinal Scoreboard
    JV Concessions (1 of 2)
    Varsity Lines (1 of 2)

Obviously, most of the jobs are very easy. Scorebook takes some work, but we can train you fairly easily. Lines seems intimidating but with a few "tricks" it is actually fairly easy, at least for the Caridinal and JV games. The speed of the game does pick up considerably for Varsity, so when doing Varsity lines it would be best to have some experience.

Please click below to signup online. If you have a problem with online signup, just send a note to "kentlakevb 'at' comcast.net" and we will be glad to add you manually!

    Schedule Changes

Some of you may have received a notice saying that your job for the JV or Cardinal team match on September 21st was removed. That is because the match against Norway on that day is a Varsity only match. Therefore there are no JV or Cardinal team jobs. We appreciate your willingness to work on that day, but with no match there is, of course, no need for those jobs.

The schedule has been updated to reflect that change and two changes (in opponents only) on the Cardinal team schedule.

We encourage everyone to sign up to help at home matches. You can sign up using the link below. Thanks.

    Sumner JV Tournament Cancelled

The JV Tournament in Sumner has been canceled.

    Cardinal Team Tournament Changed

The Cardinal Team's tournament in Sumner will be on the 11th, not the 18th. Sorry about the confusion. This means all Cardinal Team players must pay the Athletic Participation Fee prior to that date, not the 14th.

    Athletic Participation Fee

Remember that this year there is an Athletic Participation Fee of $100/sport that must be paid before your daughter can participate in the first contest. No player that has not paid the fee will be allowed to participate in games. Please pay the fee ASAP so it is taken care of before the first contest on the 14th (or the 11th for the Cardinal team).
    1. Log on to www.kent.k12.wa.us
    2. Click “For Families”
    3. Click “Online Tools”
    4. Click “Online School Fee Payments”

    Jamboree? No

There will be no jamboree this year. So the first match will be September 14th at home against Kent-Meridian.

    Parent Meeting Changed

The Parent Meeting scheduled for tonight has been changed to tomorrow night, August 31st, at 6pm in Cascade Hall.

    Sorry about the short notice.

    Sunday, August 29, 2010

    Parent Meeting

Don't forget the mandatory Parent Meeting at 6:30pm on Monday. At least one parent for every player needs to be there.

    Help Needed

As always we are looking for parents to help with game day activities. This includes concessions, lines, scorebook, scoreboard and libero tracker for each of the three teams. Don't worry if you have never done something before - we will gladly train you to do any of the jobs.

Please go to Volunteer Spot to sign up for Game Day activities.

    Yep, We're Pretty Young

Just for "kicks and grins" I figured out the grade distribution for Kentlake Volleyball this year. Including all three teams:

    All Varsity JV Cardinal
    Seniors 3 3 0 0
    Juniors 8 4 4 0
    Sophomores 15 5 7 3
    Freshmen 7 1 1 5

That may be a very long Senior Night in two years. ;)

Numbers for volleyball turnouts at all four Kent schools are reported to be down this year. While part of that may be cyclical, there is most likely a direct correlation with the implementation of the "Athletic Participation Fee" (aka "Pay-to-Play") this year.

    Tuesday, August 24, 2010

    Rosters Are Up

The rosters for each of the three teams are now listed on their respective page. Congratulations to everyone who made the team.

    Tryouts Finally Start

The 2010 volleyball season is finally here. Tryouts will be "Two-A-Days" for Monday to Wednesday, 9:00-11:30am & 1:00-3:30pm. Practice will start on Thursday, 8:00-10:00am and Noon-2pm.

    Saturday, August 21, 2010

Le Roi est mort, vive le Roi!

You may notice that the website URLs (www.kentlakevb.com and www.kentlakevolleyball.com) now point to this blog. So the website is no more and we will only have the blog in the future.

With the ability to have multiple pages (like the new pages for each team that will have team specific stuff on them this year) and to have slideshows, there is no reason to have the seperate website. The website was always harder to maintain than the blog and was just used for items of a "permanent" nature like rosters and schedules. The seperate pages on the blog can now do that job and it is easier to have everything in one place.

We will continue to use Twitter (www.twitter.com/kentlakevb) for game results and items of an immediate nature (like schedule changes at the last minute). I would suggest joining the Twitter feed just for the schedule changes if nothing else.

    Tryout Information Updated

The final schedule for Tryouts is now posted on the Tryouts page. Important additions include a team brunch on Wednesday, first cuts on Tuesday and a Varsity Campout on Friday.

    Schedule Updates

The final JV/Varsity Schedule is now posted on the Schedule page. Non-league matches against Puyallup and Central Kitsap have been added. An additional match against the club team from Norway that is coming for the Kent Classic may still be added.

You can now download the September and October calendars.

    Mandatory Parent Meeting

There will be a mandatory parent meeting (at least one parent, but both can, of course, attend) at 6:30pm on Monday, August 30th.

    Athletic Registration Is Now Late

If you have not already turned in your Athletic Registration forms (KSD Registration Form, Physical Form, Emergency Card), you will NOT be allowed to participate in tryouts on Monday.

From Mr. Rick: "I will be done checking paperwork at 7:00am Monday for that morning. If all three pieces of necessary paperwork are not turned in by that time (KSD Registration Form, Physical Form, Emergency Card), those students will not be able to participate in your practice."

So, if you have not turned in your paperwork yet, you need to get it in by 7AM on Monday, or you will miss the first day of tryouts. Hopefully lots of people turned their paperwork in on Friday as only 12 players had turned their paperwork in by 6am on Friday.

Here are the links for the required paperwork:

    Spirit Items Now Available

You can order Kentlake Volleyball spirit items (sweatshirts, t-shirts, etc) online.
    1. Go to www.brandteamstore.com
    2. Click at the bottom of the page on ‘Spirit Store’
    3. Spirit Code: 3VKENTVB (Code is case sensitive)
    4. Closing on Aug 27th
It’s a good idea to go ahead and order now because Coach Behren's has the closing date for Aug 27th (NOT the 30th as given online!); meaning the earlier you order the sooner you get your gear.

    Get Your Forms In

Remember that you need to have your Athletic Registration, Emergency Contact and Physical forms in before you will be allowed to try out for volleyball. All Freshmen and most Juniors (unless they got a physical as a sophomore) require an Athletic Physical dated AFTER June 1, 2010. No one will be allowed to try out without a valid physical.

Links to the forms are available on the Tryouts page. Most people will turn in the forms during Falcon Day but you can drop them off in the Athletic Office if you cannot make Falcon Day. Unfortunately, I don't know the schedule for when someone will be in the Athletic Office but you can call and ask.

This year the Kent School District has instituted a Pay-For-Play policy. Everyone that makes a team will have to pay a $100/season Athletic Fee. This will be due after the teams are chosen and before the first contest. No one will be allowed to play without having first paid the fee. According to School District policy, using a player that has not paid the fee yet will result in forfeiture of the contest.

    Practice Today

Don't forget there is practice from 2:30 to 4:30 today. Please be there early to be ready to go on time and to set up the nets so we don't lose valuable practice time. This is the next to last practice before the August "Dead Period".

Of course, there are also the three Summer League dates plus, for selected players, UW Team Camp, but only two more practices.

    No More Ads

You may notice that we no longer have ads on this site. The ads were there by mistake and I did not realize they were there. I have my browser set to automatically delete ads so I never saw them. I was using my wife's computer the other day and saw the ads for the first time. I then took steps to get rid of the ads and I am glad that it worked. The worst part is that we didn't get any money from the ads on our site. So, we will now continue, ad free.

    Schedule Posted

The league defined portion of the schedule has been posted (see the "Schedule" link above). Other non-league games and tournaments will be added by Coach Behrens.

This season we get to play an extra match above the normal WIAA limits as the club team from our Sister City in Norway is attending the Kent Classic and we can schedule an extra match against them. That game was a special treat for all players involved when we hosted them three or four years ago.

    Successful Summer Camp

Thanks go to all of the Kentlake players that helped make this year's Summer Camp so successful. We had over 50 campers each day ranging from 3rd grade to incoming freshmen. The player's helping always make this a very enjoyable camp for all the kids.

    Summer League

Kentlake will have two teams in the Summer Volleyball League at Kentwood this year. Games will be on Monday and Wednesday starting June 23rd. Each night each team will be in a pool of three teams. They will play twice and referee once during the night. Play will start at 6pm and continue to about 9pm. However, all players should arrive by 5:30pm so they can warm up prior to play.

We realize that not everyone can attend every time, but we encourage players to participate as much as possible. If they do commit to playing on any given night then it is very important that they show up and play.

All players that can attend on the 23rd should tell Coach Behrens or Coach Foster by the 22nd.

    Seattle U Tournament

Kentlake will be sending one team to the Seattle University Tournament on July 8th to 10th. We will have a minimum of 8 matches over the 3 days. The format will be 2 days of pool play followed by a double elimination bracket. Play will start at 9:00am each day and end when the pool or bracket is finished each day.

More details will follow as we get closer to the Tournament.

    Updates from CWU Tournament

You can follow the Kentlake teams via twitter next week. Updates will be sent out via twitter on how the teams do. It may not be real-time, but we should have all scores and some highlights from both teams as soon as possible. You can have twitter messages delivered to your phone via text messages, or log on and check.

    Follow Kentlake Volleyball at http://twitter.com/kentlakevb

    CWU Tournament

Remember the team is doing the Central Washington University Team Tournament next Monday and Tuesday. The players need to let Coach Behrens know by practice tomorrow (Thursday) whether they can attend. They also need to turn in $27 for the room by then.

We are staying at the Holiday Inn Express in Ellensburg. They are holding rooms for parents at the same rate as the team ($99 +tax). They are holding rooms at this rate until Friday (6/18). Call 509-962-9400 to make a reservation. Rooms are under Kentlake High School Volleyball Parents.

    Fundraiser This Weekend

Please come out and support the team at the Nolte State Park Triathlon on Saturday. We need everyone that can come to arrive at or before 6AM (yes, it's early) to help run the triathlon. It is fairly easy work, but we need a lot of bodies. We also need 10 people (that's the maximum we get paid for) to help take everything down after the triathlon is over. That should last until about 3pm.

The park is located near Cumberland, east of Black Diamond and Northeast of Enumclaw. Click for map.

    Practice Today

Practice today will start at 3pm since the gym is not being used. I do not know what time practice will end.

    Wednesday, June 9, 2010

    CWU Tournament

Kentlake will be sending two teams to the tournament/team camp at Central Washington University the week after school is out, June 21 & 22. Coach Behrens needs to know which players are able to attend. Please let her know at or before Thursday’s practice if you will be available for those two days.

    1. We will be staying at Holiday Inn Express the night of the 21st. We are in the process of finalizing rooms for Monday night. The cost per player for the hotel is $27—hotel provides continental breakfast.
    2. Parents, please let Coach Behrens know if you plan on attending the tournament AND if you are available to drive girls over—if that is the case, we have rooms reserved for chaperones. Please let Coach Behrens know if you would like to chaperone.
VERY IMPORTANT: All players will need to complete the CWU Health/Emergency Information Form for CWU SPORT CAMPS. It is page 4 of the Camp Brochure which can be downloaded from the CWU web site. The completed form should be given to the coaches by the end of practice on Thursday, June 17th.

    Practice

Summer Practice continues this week with practices from 4:30 to 6:30, Tuesday to Thursday, in the Main Gym. Tuesday is the first day that incoming Freshmen can practice with the team.

    Nolte Park Triathlon

We still need volunteers to help with the Nolte Park Triathlon on Saturday, June 19th. Please contact Coach Behrens to volunteer.

    Friday, June 4, 2010

    Free Sports Physicals

Don't forget the free Sports Physicals tomorrow at KM from 8AM to Noon. Even though it is at KM, all high school players from any school in need of a physical (all incoming freshmen and anyone else that has not had one in the last two years) can attend this session.

The physicians at Valley Medical Center do this as a community service. So you are getting a "real doc".

There will another session in August at Kentlake, but don't put it off until then. Please go ahead and get the physical done now so you don't have to worry about it later.

    "Pay for Play"

Participate Fees, also known as "Pay to Play", will be coming to Kent High School and Middle School sports this fall. HS players will be charged $100/sport (up to a max of $200/year) and MS players will be charged $60/sport (up to a maximum of $180/year - there are four seasons in middle school).

In addition middle school volleyball is switching from spring to fall and middle school baseball and fastpitch programs will be eliminated.

    No Practice On Wednesday

There will be no practice on Wednesday due to the Trade Show in the gym that night.

    Thursday, May 27, 2010

    Triathalon Fundraiser

We will once again help run the Cascade Edge Triathalon at Nolte State Park on June 19th. We need help running the day of race items before and during the event and then cleaning up after the event. We need 30 or more volunteers for "day of" items and 10 or more for clean-up. Please write to volunteer. We really need your help.

    Car Wash

There will be a car wash in support of sending the team to the UW team camp on June 5th at the Maple Valey Chevron (27201 216th Avenue Southeast, corner of Kent-Kangley Road and 216th Ave SE, across from the Pla-Mor Tavern). Please come out and support Kentlake Volleyball.

    Wednesday, May 26, 2010

    Free Sports Physicals

All incoming freshmen and most incoming juniors are required to obtain a sports physical after June 1st. A sports physical is good for two years and a middle school physical is not good for high school.

The Kent School District will have free sports physicals for anyone interested. You can attend either session:
    • Saturday, June 5th - 8:00am to Noon at Kent-Meridian HS
    • Saturday, August 14th - 8:00am to Noon at Kentlake HS

    Summer Calendar

The summer calendar can be downloaded from the website. Some of the highlights:
    • Selected players have been invited to attend the University of Washington Team Camp at the end of July. This is an excellent experience.
    • Two teams will participate in Summer League at Kentwood. Coach Behrens will be selecting the teams based on June practices.
    • Two teams (not necessarily the same two as above) will be playing at the Central Washington University tournament on June 21st and 22nd. This is the Monday and Tuesday following the end of school the previous Friday. Players will stay in the CWU dorms.

    Summer Camp

The Falcon Elementary Camp and the Falcon Middle School Camp will be held June 28th to 30th at Kentlake. Players will be divided by skill level to offer the most appropriate level of training for every athlete.

Each camp is $60 for the three days. You can download the camp brochure from the website.

    Informational Meeting

Current Kentlake students that are interested in spring and summer activities should attend the meeting on Friday after school. Current 8th graders are busy with middle school volleyball and should participate with those activities instead. Look to this blog for more information about summer activities.

    8th Graders

Current 8th graders (incoming freshmen) can attend summer practices after the last middle school volleyball matches. There are matches on Tuesday, June 1st, so they can start Wednesday, June 2nd.

Practice that week is from 2:30 to 4:30 and the middle schools don't get out until after 3pm, so we fully understand that you will be late. This is unavoidable and no 8th graders should leave school early to attend practice.

    New Season Approaches

A new season of Kentlake Volleyball approaches. We will be updating the blog and the website with information about spring and summer activities. Later in the summer we will have information about tryouts (which start August 23rd this year, by the way).
