Final? Bracket for WCD

Well, the powers that be monkeyed around with the brackets a little more on Tuesday (swapping Kent-Meridian and Bethel) so the projected second round match-ups (assuming the seeding holds) would be:

SPSL #1 vs Narrows 3
SPSL #2 vs SPSL #5
SPSL #3 vs Narrows 1
SPSL #4 vs Narrows 2

(K-M being 5th out of 10 in the SPSL would be a higher seed than Stadium which is 4th out of 6 in the Narrows League)

This leaves Kentlake playing Curtis at 2:30pm on Friday.

Curtis beat Auburn Riverside 3-1 last week to capture the SPSL #7 seed. Curtis was ranked #8 in the first poll this year, but was beset with injuries early in season. They are healthy now and are a formidable foe for Kentlake, much more than Central Kitsap would have been.

If Kentlake beats Curtis then they have to play Fifth-ranked Olympia, a short scrappy team, in the second round (5:45pm on Friday).

WCD Changes Everything

I have no idea what is going on, but for some reason the "Powers That Be" have posted a schedule that flips the brackets on their ear - and does it extremely strangely.

In the original bracket that is in the Tournament Handbook and was posted online until this morning, the most likely second round matchups on the winners side were:

SPSL #1 vs Narrows #4
SPSL #2 vs Narrows #3
SPSL #3 vs Narrows #2
SPSL #4 vs Narrows #1

Makes sense. But wait...

For some unknown reason, a new bracket was posted today in which the #3 and #4 seeds have been flipped - essentially making the #4 seeds into #3 seeds and vice versa. So, the new matchups are:

SPSL #1 vs Narrows #3
SPSL #2 vs Narrows #4
SPSL #3 vs Narrows #1
SPSL #4 vs Narrows #2

Hopefully they will fix that, as that makes no sense.

This would mean a first round matchup against Curtis and a possible second round matchup against Olympia, but I am going to wait a day or two before analyzing those matchups as hopefully it will change back.

The Road to State

There are two methods to get to the State Tournament via the West Central District #3 (aka WCD) tournament.

The easiest route is to win the first two matches. This will put you in a group of four undefeated teams, all of which are guaranteed a spot at State. Those four teams play each other at 4pm on Saturday the 15th and then the winners play for 1st and 2nd, while the losers play for 3rd and 6th (both games at 8pm).

The harder route comes if you lose either of your first two matches. On the losers side, if you lose twice you are out. Otherwise, if you win the rest of your matches you tie for 4th/5th with one other one loss team. It doesn't matter if you lose-win-win-win or win-lose-win-win, you would get to the point where there are only two teams left in the losers bracket with one loss. However, those two one loss teams do NOT play each other. Instead they have a coin-flip to determine 4th/5th places.

Kentlake to Face Central Kitsap Friday

Kentlake will face the Central Kitsap Cougars at 4pm on Friday, November 7th at the Kitsap Pavilion in Silverdale. Central Kitsap finished 5th at the Narrows League Tournament, losing to eventual #1 Olympa, 3-0, and then beating Shelton, 3-2, in the loser out game. They wrapped up the tournament with a 3-2 victory over South Kitsap to finish 5th.

The Cougars were 11-6 overall and 6-4 in Narrows League action on the year.

If Kentlake defeats Central Kitsap, they will face the winner of the Bellarmine Prep (Narrows #2) and Auburn Riverside (SPSL #8) match at 7:30pm. If they lose to CK, then they would face the loser of the Bellarmine Prep/Auburn Riverside match, again at 7:30pm. The winner of the second round winners match will be guaranteed a berth at state.

Bellarmine Prep was 8-2 in league and 11-4 overall. They beat Wilson 3-0 in the first round of the Narrows League Tournament, then Gig Harbor 3-1 before losing to Olympia 2-3 in the final.

Assuming Kentlake does not lose twice on Friday, they will be back in action at the Kitsap Pavilion on Saturday, November 15th.

Falcons Take Third in SPSL; Kozy Sets Record

Kentlake defeated Puyallup 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 21-25, 27-25, 15-13) to earn the SPSL #3 seed to the WCD tournament this Friday. Senior Outside Hitter Melissa Kozy shattered the school record for kills with 32.
