Food Needed for Tournament on Saturday

This Saturday is the big Kent Classic, the premier early season volleyball tournament in Washington State. The tournament is hosted jointly by Kentlake and Kentwood. We need volunteers to bring food for the Hospitality Room. Please sign up online or send an email to "kentlakevb at comcast.net"

Help Still Needed On Tuesday

There are still a number of jobs that need to be done for the home contests against Kent Meridian tomorrow. Please volunteer to help out. We especially need JV parents to help during the Varsity games. Do not worry if you don't know how to do a job, most are very easy and we can easily provide training. The tough jobs already have people working them, so please help.

Freshman and Sophomore Schedules Up

The Freshman and Sophomore schedules are up on the consolidated calendar page. You need to be VERY careful in reading the Sophomore and Freshman games as there are some very strange things in there. For instance, on October 8th, the Kentlake Sophomore team plays the Auburn Riverside Sophomore team (known as "AR C" on the schedule). No problem there. However, they play each other at Auburn High School. So, please be careful about locations as this sort of thing happens several times during the year.

A note on times: you will notice that the Freshman and Sophomore games will often start at 5:45pm and the JV game will then start at 6pm. Seem strange? However, there is a very valid reason for it, and it actually benefits the parents for once. Under SPSL rules we have to charge admission for any Varsity contest, or sub-Varsity contest that proceeds a Varsity contest, that starts at 6pm or later. We are prohibited from charging admission for any sub-Varsity contest that starts before 6pm (maybe Varsity too, I can't remember). So, the spectators for the JV game would have to pay admission, but not the spectators for the Sophomore or Freshman game that starts at 5:45pm. However, it the game had started at 6pm, and there was a Varsity contest for any schoool after that, you would have to pay.

Online Calendars

You can download calenders for September and October from the website. Highlights of the season include the Kent Classic in September and the Spokane Crossover in October for the Varsity team and the Sumner JV Tournament for the JV team. Districts this year are at the Kitsap Pavilion in Silverdale. And, of course, the State Tournament, bumped one week for a ventriloquist, at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.

Regular season highlights include the non-league match with Kentwood at Kentlake on September 22nd and the league contests at Kentwood on October 27th and Senior Night against Auburn Riverside on October 21st. Those will all be huge matches.

The season starts very late, but there are five matches plus the Kent Classic tournament in the first nine days of the season. That will be a lot of volleyball in a short period, so use those down days well.

Where are the schedules?

Parents of players on the Freshman and Sophomore teams might, quite rightly, be wondering where the schedules for those teams are. Unfortunately, how many schools have Freshman and "C" teams changes from year to year (plus in some years Kentwood has two "C" teams and in others only one). Therefore the SPSL has to wait until after rosters have been finalized and the number of teams is known before they can develop the schedule. The past two years the Freshman and "C" teams have run a joint schedule since there were so few schools with "C" teams. Last year it was only Kentlake, Kentwood, Kentridge and Auburn Riverside with "C" teams. This year Kent Meridian is hoping to have all four also. Of course, not all of the schools are four year schools (and therefore don't have any Freshman teams) and some only have JV and Varsity teams.

We are very lucky that at least three of the four Kent schools have at least four volleyball teams - that is definitely the exception, not the rule, in this State.

Parents Need to Help

We need parents to help with all of the home matches this year. It works best if Varsity parents help with the JV games, JV parents help with the Varsity games and Freshman and "C" team parents help with their daughter's games.

The schedule for the Freshman and "C" team games will be available soon.

Please sign-up online.

Get Your Spirit Wear Today

You can order Kentlake Volleyball t-shirts, polos, sweatpants, etc online. Go to http://www.gearspiritpacks.com/, and use the User Id of "kentlake" and the password of "volleyball08". You only have one week from today to order items.

Varsity Jamboree

The Jamboree will be September 9th at Emerald Ridge HS on Puyallup's South Hill. It is a long way down there and the traffic can be bad, so allow plenty of time to get there. Play will be being at 3pm against Fife. The format is one game to 25 against 6 different teams. Round 1 is Fife (3pm) and Graham-Kapowsin (4pm). Round 2 is Curtis (5pm) and Stadium (5:30pm). Round 3 is North Mason (6pm) and Beamer (7pm).

You will notice that there are 4A teams from SPSL South and Narrows League plus 2A Fife (who is consistently very good).
