Sports Nutirition

The US Olympic Committee has an interesting guide on sports nutrition on their website. It is not sports specific for volleyball but has lots of good information on sports nutrition.

Senior Night

Tonight is Senior Night against Kentwood. Senior Night festivities will begin about 7pm and may last a while with seven seniors. Tonight is also a "Dig Pink" night for Breast Cancer Awareness. With so many Varsity parents involved in Senior Night we need all the JV and Cardinal parents that can to help with their games.

Kentlake Grad Leads US to Pan Am Win

Excerpts from the report by USA Volleyball:

Courtney Thompson (Kentlake 2003) set Team USA to a 43.1 kill percent and .266 hitting efficiency (47-18-109). Mexico was limited to a 25.4 kill percent and .085 hitting efficiency (30-20-118). Tama Miyashiro (Kaneohe, Hawaii) provided the Americans with a team-high nine digs, while Klineman had a team-high four excellent receptions.

Team USA out-blocked Mexico 13-6 and held a 47-30 advantage in kills. Mexico managed a slim 19-18 margin in digs and totaled 29 excellent receptions on 71 attempts compared to the Americans’ 10 excellent receptions on 55 attempts.

“We knew tonight’s crowd would be way more intense than the past two days,” Klineman said of the near-capacity crowd. “Our coaches told us to embrace it and use it.”

Thompson added that the environment was special to compete in against the host team.

“Any time you get to play a game like this, it’s special,” Thompson said. “These games may happen once in a tournament. It was an honor to play Mexico here.”

KM Match Moved

The Kent-Meridian match scheduled for Thursday at Kentlake has been moved to Kent-Meridian HS.

If you remember the first match of the season was moved to Kentlake from KM because their gym was not ready yet. At the time the agreement was that the league match would not be swapped to KM, but I guess that agreement has changed.

Lincoln HS

Kentlake travels to Lincoln HS in Tacoma for a match with the Lincoln Abes. JV and C will be at 3pm and Varsity appears to be at 4:45pm (that is the standard time for their home matches). Lincoln is 2-3 on the year, with both victories coming over Mount Tahoma (3-0 and 3-1). The team will be without Senior OH Natalie Berube who as part of the Homecoming Court will be at Falcon Night festivities this evening.

It's Game Day!!!

We may be last in the nation to start, but Kentlake Volleyball finally kicks off the 2011 season tonight at home against Kent-Meridian. JV and Cardinal start at 6pm and Varsity will follow at approximately 7:15pm. There is an admission charge (I think $7) but you get in free if you help out. We still need:

  • Cardinal Libero Tracker
  • Cardinal Lines
  • Cardinal Scorebook
  • JV Libero Tracker
  • JV Lines
  • Varsity Concessions
Libero tracker and Cardinal lines are very easy. Remember: you get in free if you help the team!

As a result we quickly need to get ready for an extra home game. Please sign up for jobs ASAP.  Remember, if you work a job you get in free.

Note: You may need to right click on the above box and open it in a new window.

Please Register

If you did not early this summer, please fill out the online registration for our new mailing list. All players and parents should register.

Need Families to Host

Crook County (defending four-time Oregon 5A/4A champions) are coming for the Kent Classic on September 17th. Three years ago their district eliminated funding for all sports, so they have to raise $24,000 each season.

To help them out, we need people willing to host one or more players the evening of Friday, September 16th. Please reply to kentlakevb "at" comcast.net. Thanks

Thursday, August 25, 2011

Practice Times

Normal practice for JV/Cardinal will be 3:00-5:30 and for Varsity will be 4:30-7:00. This will be the case even after school starts.

Practice this Friday will be from 3:00-5:30 for all teams.

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

Rosters Posted

The rosters for the teams are posted on their respective pages.

Parent Meeting

There will be a meeting for all parents at 6:30pm on Wednesday, August 24th at Kentlake. At least one parent from each player family should attend. Even those "experienced hands" should attend to meet the new coach and learn about this year's Kentlake Volleyball team.

Monday, August 22, 2011

Tryouts

Tryouts start today at 3pm (until 7pm today and tomorrow). Please be on the court and ready to play volleyball at 3pm. That means gym clothes, shoes, knee pads, etc on and ready. I would suggest bringing a water bottle (with your name on it) and a snack (something easy to digest).

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

Registration Must Be Complete This Week

Athletic registration must be complete THIS WEEK in order to tryout on Monday. There will not be sufficient time to register on Monday.

The preferred time is during Athletic Registration Day on Thursday (9am to Noon and 1pm to 3pm), but the Athletic Office will also be open on Friday during the same times.

The ASB Cashier's office will also be open to pay your ASB fee, but that can also be done online. It should also be paid by Friday. Only the $30 ASB Fee, not the fees for parking and the yearbook, has to be paid at this time.

The $100 Athletic Participation Fee is not due until after the teams are announced.

Sunday, August 14, 2011

Athletic Registration Days

All prospective players should complete registration for Kentlake Volleyball this Tuesday or Thursday, August 16th and 18th, from 9:00 to 12:00 and 1:00 to 3:00 at Kentlake. All players must complete and turn in the following:
  1. 2011-2012 District Athletic Registration Form
  2. Interscholastic Athletic Participation Information (Page 3 of above)
  3. Concussion Information (Page 4 of above)
  4. Emergency Medical Card
  5. District Preparticipation History and Physical Examination Form*
  6. Pay ASB Fee (can be done online with credit/debit card or in person with check or cash)

* All incoming high school students including all freshmen and transfer students, plus anyone whose physical is more than 24 months old, must get a new physical. So, most sophomores and seniors do not, while all freshmen and most juniors do.

All players must pay their ASB fee before tryouts. The separate $100 Athletic Participation Fee is not due until "the second Monday after tryouts" - which is, of course, Labor Day.

It is HIGHLY encouraged that all players turn their forms in on Tuesday, August 16th, so there is leeway to allow for changes or mistakes to be corrected by the 18th. The player and a parent should both attend so it is easy to get a signature if something was overlooked or a new form is needed to be filled out.

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ALL REQUIRED FORMS IN BY AUGUST 19th YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO TRYOUT UNTIL ALL PAPERWORK IS COMPLETE. Since tryouts are only two days this year, that would put you at a significant disadvantage in making the team.

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

Tryouts

Tryouts for all teams will be held from 3pm to 7pm on August 22nd and 23rd. Teams will be posted online and practice will begin on August 24th. There will be a Parent Meeting on August 25th and a "program bonding night" on the 26th or very shortly thereafter.

Monday, August 1, 2011

Schedule Posted

The 2011 Preliminary Schedule has been posted. Two more non-league matches and a second tournament will be added. The Cardinal Team schedule will be posted in early September.

Thursday, July 28, 2011

Kentlake MB At International Tournament

Kentlake MB Sean Taylor is participating in the USAV International High Performance Tournament in Tucson this week as part of the US Youth Continental Team. The 29 player group features players born in 1994 and 1995 from across the US, mostly juniors and seniors with just a few to-be sophomores like Sean.

The group practiced from July 20th to July 25th and has been playing the tournament since then. They finish tomorrow with bracket play. Unfortunately her team, USA GYC Blue is only 1-5 but hopefully they will finish strong in their bracket.

Players were chosen in tryouts held in conjunction with major club tournaments throughout the country. Less than 30 players make each of the USA Youth National Team and A2 Team. The Continental Team is the third level with less than 30 players. There are no sophomores on the US YNT and only one on the YA2 Team. There are a total of six, including Sean, on the YCT.

Dead Period

Each year the first three weeks of August are decreed by WIAA to be the "dead period". Coaches can have no contact with their players. This ensures everyone is equally rusty when tryouts begin. Accordingly there will be no activities until the start of tryouts on August 22nd.

Everyone should make sure they have all of their documentation, including their physical if needed ready for the start of tryouts. Remember, no physical - no practice (or tryouts).

There will be no Falcon Days this year, so all your forms (including that important physical) should be turned in during Athletic Registration 8/16 & 8/18 from 9:00 to 12:00 and 1:00 to 3:00.

Remember, Physicians from Valley Medical Center's Clinic Network will conduct free sports physicals on Saturday, August 13 at Kentlake. Students participating in school sports are required to have a valid sports physical before competing. Physicals are good for two years except all incoming freshmen require a new physical, so normally incoming freshmen and juniors will require a new physical.

Search for New Coach

As you probably know, Coach Behrens was relieved of her coaching duties in December. The Kentlake Athletic Director, Bruce Rick, is currently leading the effort to hire a replacement. He is aware of the summer activities and should have a coach in place well before then. Kentlake is desirable position for a volleyball coach and we will hopefully hire a very good coach soon.
