School Record in Block Assists

With eight block assists (and 10 total blocks) against Kentwood, Kentlake Junior Sean Taylor set a new school record. There is no school record for total blocks although it is very likely that 10 blocks in a match would be a new record. This is the first school record since 2008.

On Thurdsday Kentlake will travel to Auburn HS in a must-win match.

Falcons Down Rams

Behind 14 kills from Victoria Boyko and 11 kills from Sean Taylor, the Kentlake Falcons defeated the Mount Rainier Rams 3-1 in action Wednesday night. Mount Rainier proved to be a "scrappy" team but did not have the hitters to challenge the better Falcons.

Kentlake easily won the first two games (25-11 and 25-12) before Coach Grady mixed things up including having Senior Setter Ginger Nason play OH. Unfortunately a disorganized Falcon squad give Mount Rainier too much of a lead and was not able to come back in time and the Rams won 26-24. Kentlake was back in control in game four and cruised to victory 25-18.

Lexi Lockhart led the Falcons in hitting percentage (.471 with 9 kills and only one error in 17 attempts). Jacy Wilson had 23 assists while Ginger Nason finished with 17. Libero Erin Ryan had 15 digs. Gaby Drllevich had 8 kills.

Mount Rainier Comes to Kentlake

In the only match this week, Mount Rainier visits Kentlake this evening. The Rams are 1-7 on the year with every match being a sweep. According to their Facebook page, the Rams have been bothered by injuries making an already difficult season that much more difficult.

Falcons Down Bears

Behind the 11 kills and 3 aces from Victoria Boyko, 8 kills, 3 aces and 7 blocks from Sean Taylor and 8 kills from Lexi Lockhart, the Kentlake Falcons downed the Tahoma Bears in five sets. Marisa Lytle hit .385 (6 kills and 1 error on 13 attempts) while Taylor DiLenardo hit .444 (5 kills and 1 error on 9 attempts) to lead the Falcons in that category. Erin Ryan had 17 digs while Ginger Nason had 20 assists to lead the team.

There is no practice for Varsity on Friday.

Tahoma Tonight

Kentlake travels to Tahoma for a "must win" match against the Bears. Tahoma is 1-1 in League and 2-5 overall with a 5 set loss to Kentridge and a sweep of Mount Rainier. Tahoma is led by coaches daughter MB Kylie Eager. Tahoma is always a tough place to play so come out and support our Falcons in a critical match for Districts.

Kentlake Defeats Lincoln

Kentlake easily defeated the Lincoln Abes Wednesday night, 25-12, 25-14, 25-7 behind the 10 kills (10 of 16 for .625 hitting percentage) from Sean Taylor and 8 kills from Lexi Lockhart. Ginger Nason had 15 assists and Jacy Wilson had 8.

Kent Classic

Despite a 2-2-1 record and finishing tied for 22nd, there were a lot of positives out of the Kent Classic for Kentlake. Obviously leading the #2 team in the state (Mead) late in both games (before ultimately falling 18-25, 21-25) was promising, but could have been better. All day long the entire team played well.

Some individual highlights include Victoria Boyko with 10 kills against Mead (and 31 overall), Lexi Lockhart with 6 kills against Garfield (and 14 overall, outstanding for a right side), Marisa Lytle with 9 kills and 9 blocks, including 5 blocks against Monroe, Gaby Drllevich with 4 aces against Lakeside and 7 kills against North Kitsap (and second on the team with 15 overall), Lexi Lockhart and Sean Taylor each with 8 blocks, Ginger Nason with 45 assists and Taylor DiLeonado with 4 blocks against Lakeside.

Falcons Beat TJ

The Kentlake Varsity and JV both defeated Thomas Jefferson on Wednesday. Varsity swept TJ 3-0 and JV won 2-1. Varsity was led by Marissa Lytle with 8 kills (8 of 11 with no errors for .727 hitting percentage), Victoria Boyko with 7 kills (in only two games) and Sean Taylor with six kills (6 of 7 with no errors for a .857 hitting percentage) and four blocks.

Going into the Kent Classic on Saturday, Sean Taylor has a .457 hitting percentage for the year (anything over .300 is usually considered excellent) with 26 kills, 12 blocks and 51 service attempts, Victoria Boyko has 28 kills, 7 aces, 99 service receptions and 36 digs, Erin Ryan has 89 service receptions and 45 digs, Lexi Lockhart has 8 blocks and Ginger Nason has 49 assists.

Enumclaw

After a spirited loss to Bethel last night, the Kentlake Volleyball team travels to Enumclaw for their final non-conference match before SPSL North play kicks off tomorrow at TJ. The Hornets are 2-1 on the young season with a loss to KM and victories over Auburn and White River. There is no "C" team match and Enumclaw only has JV and Varsity.

Thursday, September 13, 2012

Graham Kapowsin

The Graham-Kapowsin Eagles come to Kentlake tonight. They are 2-0 on the season with sweeps of Mount Rainier and Kentridge, plus participated in a tournament last weekend. They were led in the Kentridge match by Kyla Ogburn with 10 kills. Their setter, Alex Cuilepia, had 11 assists for the match.

Game Day!

The first match of the season for Varisty and JV is finally here. JV and "C" will play at 6pm (JV in the Main Gym and "C" in the Aux Gym) and Varsity will follow somewhere around 7:15pm.

Spanaway Lake is 2-0 on the season with 3-1 victory over Tahoma and a 3-0 sweep of Bonney Lake. They have been led thus far this season by Senior OH Arlicia Ortiz who is averaging 12 kills per match. Senior Setter Seirra Hoover is averaging 29 assists.

The Sentinels defense features two outstanding defensive specialists in Libero Raelin Magaoay and DS Kaila Norton.

Concession Buyer Needed

We need someone to step up and take on the responsibility to purchase the items for us to sell at concessions and keep on top of the inventory and replenish as needed. You will be reimbursed promptly for the cost of items you purchase. Please email us at "kentlakevb at comcast dot net" if you can help.

If no one volunteers for this we will not have concessions at matches this year. We have a very good idea of what we normally sell so there is no guesswork involved.

Volunteers Needed On Tuesday

We still need several adult volunteers for the matches on Tuesday. Currently the following jobs are available:

  • C Scorebook
  • C Lines (1 of 2)
  • C Libero Tracker
  • C Scoreboard
  • JV/C Concessions (1 of 2)
  • Varsity Concessions (1 of 2)
  • Varsity Lines (1 of 2)
You can signup online at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090A4FAAA62BAA8-spanaway2. Remember, if you work during the match you get in free (Hey, "six bucks is six bucks") but more importantly you help our daughter's and make sure they don't have to fill in for the adults.

We prefer to have "C" parents do the "C" games, Varsity parents do the "JV" games and JV/C parents do the Varsity games. That way the parents can see their girls play. Please help out if you possibly can.

Some quick notes about the various jobs:
  • Scorebook - keeps the score sheet, including who gets what points, substitutions, etc. Not super hard, but sort of imposing at first. Don't worry though, "C" Scorebook is fairly easy and there are several people around that can help show you the ropes.
  • Lines - signals where the ball lands in or out, touches and line faults on serving. A fairly easy job at the "C" level, slightly tougher at JV and probably the most difficult job at Varsity (the speed of the game increases greatly). However, there are some simple "tricks" that make it easier that we can easily show you.
  • Libero Tracker - keeps track of when the libero goes in and out and helps the person doing scorebook. Often one or both teams won't even have a libero at the "C" team level. By far the easiest job available.
  • Scoreboard - if you can count by "1s" you can do the scoreboard. Both gyms use electronic scoreboards so there is no "flipping" involved, just pushing buttons. Also start/stop the timer for time outs and between games. Very easy.
  • Concessions - serve food and collect money. Concession menu is not very involved. Can watch the JV/Varsity matches. However, if you can't stand the smell of hot dogs (like me) this is NOT the job for you.

Volunteers Needed

We have added online signup for the volunteer jobs needed for each home Volleyball match. If you did not sign up at the Fall Sports Meeting please sign up for jobs at each home match (plus we need signups for the Spanaway Lake and Lincoln matches that were not done at the meeting). If you work the match you get in free.

9/11 Spanaway Lake
9/13 Graham Kapowsin
9/19 Bethel "C" ("C" Parents only, JV/Varsity at TJ)
9/25 Kentridge
9/26 Lincoln (No "C" game, JV and Varsity only)
10/3 Mount Rainier
10/16 Auburn Riverside (Senior Night)

Twitter

Kentlake Volleyball does have a Twitter account and Coach Grady will probably use it more this year than we have in the past. In the past we have posted game scores to the Twitter and that is about it (other than automatic forwarding of all these lovely blog posts ;)).

We would encourage you to sign up for our Twitter feed at twitter.com/kentlakevb (I know, real original name).

Schedules

The 2012 Schedules for all three teams are updated. Click on the "Schedule/Results" tab. There should be several non-League matches added.

Summer Camps

Anyone that is interested in attending a volleyball camp during August should consider the camps run at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma by Coach Mark Massey. There are plenty of spaces still available in all camps:

August 6th-9th (1:30-4:30pm) - Setter/Hitter Academy
August 6th-9th (5:30-8:00pm) - Competition Camp
August 10th-11th (9:00am-4:30pm) - Complete Player
August 10th or 11th - Specialty Mini-camps

I've been smiling so much, my face hurts!

The Seattle Times is running an Olympic's Diary from former Kentlake star Courtney Thompson about her experiences in London during the Olympics. It should be good reading.

July 26th: "We're in London"
July 31st: "Reliving the Opening Ceremony"
August 3rd: "Family"

Jefferson Match Moved to TJ

Falcon Night will be September 19th. The home volleyball contests scheduled for that date will be changed to "away" contests at Thomas Jefferson.

ATHLETIC REGISTRATION

All athletic registration forms need to be turned in between 9:00—12:00 and 1:00—3:00 p.m. on Monday, August 13 or Wednesday, August 15. Before turning out for volleyball, you must purchase an ASB Card ($30.00), clear all fines, and complete a physicalregistration form and emergency card. Forms are available in the Main Office, Student Services Office and Athletic Office.

If you turned in a physical form at Kentlake last year, (dated after June 1, 2011, so once every two years), you do not need a new physical. Incoming 9th graders must have a school physical for High School Sports completed after June 1, 2012. Physicals from middle schools do NOT carry over.

ALL student athletes will need to turn in the athletic registration form and the emergency card at registration. If you are out of town on these two athletic registration days, you may have someone else register for you. Be sure to send a check for the ASB card ($30.00) OR pay online prior to the registration day, along with the athletic registration forms.

Volleyball tryouts will begin on Monday, August 20 (5pm to 7pm) and will continue on Tuesday, August 21st (9am to noon). Athletes who do not turn in all forms on August 13 or 15 will not be eligible to practice on the first day. The Athletic Participation Fee ($100, $50 if you receive reduced lunch) must be paid BY Monday, August 27 for ALL athletes (volleyball is a "cut" sport so the fee is not required until after the teams are announced). You may pay online with a credit card or at the Cashier’s Office with cash or check. The online payment option is available starting August 9.

Directions for online payments:
  • Go to https://www1.kent.k12.wa.us/schoolpayment/
  • Enter the student ID number, birthdate and home phone number for EACH student you plan to purchase fees/items for.
  • Make sure “All Categories” is selected in the drop down box under the school name.

Thompson Named to US Olympic Team

Former Kentlake star Courtney Thompson was nominated today to the US Olympic Team for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. The team must still be approved by the US Olympic Committee, but that is a formality. She will join Lindsey Berg in the setting duties. Thompson was instrumental in helping the US National Team to the World Grand Prix title this last weekend as they finished undefeated over the four week tournament. The US Olympic Team will train in Anaheim until they depart for London. Their first match is July 28th. Thompson led Kentlake to three straight State Championships from 2000 to 2002, dropping only one match in the three years.

Online Camp Payment

Using the KSD online payment system for camp is a little complicated.

To Pay On Line with a credit card you have to add Multiple units. So if you are paying $250 you have to add 10 at $25 OR if you are paying for two days to get to $150 you have to pay 6 at $25. The ONLINE system will ONLY work until June 20th – the last day of school. KSD will shut down the on line system after that. The Volleyball camp is the last item in the list. A quick way to find it is to filter for “Activities” in the box on the left side of the middle blue bar above the line items. People can still pay by check if they want – turned into the KL Cashier. The only way to pay with a credit card is the on line system (cashier accepts checks only).

Here is the link to log in – need student number, home phone and birth date to login.

Gold Medal Squared Camp

Kentlake will offer a camp put on by Gold Medal Squared this summer. It will be for all returning Varsity and JV players with select other invitees. The camp will be at Kentlake from June 25th to 28th. Note that participating in the camp does not automatically grant you a spot on a Kentlake Volleyball team, although it would not hurt your chances. Those spots are determined through tryouts in August.
